Kazbegi and Gergeti Sameba - the Caucasus high road

Overview

Three days driving the Georgian Military Highway from Tbilisi north to Kazbegi. Stops include Mtskheta and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, the Ananuri fortress complex, the Gudauri ski pass, and finally Stepantsminda where Mount Kazbeg (Mkinvartsveri) rises 5054m above the village. From there we hike (or 4x4 drive) up to Gergeti Sameba - the most photographed church in Georgia, alone on its hilltop with the mountain behind it.
